Gourdon

Short Film

Gourdon began as a fairly simple proof of concept project for a Mograph effect and workflow I was developing at the time, as well as an exploration

of nature-based shading and rendering techniques in Octane.

Initially, it was not intended to be a

short film.

One of the things I’ve always loved about Pixar is their method for testing new technologies. Instead of just doing a smattering of individual tests,

they will often develop entire projects to put these new techniques, tools, and technologies through their paces.

When we fans get lucky, those test projects become Pixar Shorts.

Gourdon is certainly no Pixar Short, but it did become a sandbox for me to push Forester and Quixel Megascans,

customized nature-based shaders in Octane, and some interesting Mograph techniques - in a story-driven project.

David Ariew and Eyedesyn's awesome tutorial series, "Create Digital Nature Renders Using Octane Render", as well as several tuts from Epic J Creations, helped tremendously in my learning the ins and outs of creating very

natural looking Octane foliage shaders. Although Gourdon was completed some time ago, I continue to use and hone these techniques.

The main character, if you can call it that, allowed me to try out several interesting Mograph techniques that I learned from David Brodeur (aka Yo Brilly), and Greg Kulz.

Big thanks to all those artists for sharing their expertise.
